Colouring your hair when you’re pregnant…

Theres a lot of controversy about colouring your hair when you are pregnant. Some women won’t dare do it, others are fine to have foils or colour that doesn’t touch the scalp and others simply go about their hair care routine exactly the same as before.

Im certainly not here to tell you one way or another is the right way as everyone needs to take their own journey. If you are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant and just don’t know where you sit in this debate, Im here to give you enough information for you to make an informed decision.

Although fairly limited, most research indicates the chemicals found in both semi-permanent and permanent dyes are not highly toxic and are safe to use during pregnancy. In addition, only small amounts of hair dye may be absorbed by the skin, leaving little that would be able to reach the fetus.

Hair colour these days, do come in ammonia free ranges and some even have no peroxide or PPD, these are called water colours,  although not all salons will stock these colour ranges. If this is something you are thinking would suit you I recommend to always check before you make an appointment if the salon you go to has these sorts of dyes.

If you want to colour your hair but don’t want the colour to touch your scalp, you can have foils or balayage techniques applied. This way you can obtain some grey coverage if needed with foils and/or have a pop of colour on your ends all whilst being mindful of extra chemical absorption.

One thing I am quite strong about is that you do not colour your hair at home especially when you are pregnant. The chemicals in box dye’s are extremely strong. Inhaling these strong chemicals, paired with the absorption into the skin makes them all the more potent.

Ensuring you feel good inside and out is an important aspect of a happy pregnancy, and a hair cut and colour is often an excellent break from a busy time. With a little thought and knowledge you can now make an appointment knowing your baby is safe.
