What hair colour is right for you?


Ensuring you have the perfect hair colour is crucial to maintaining that healthy glow. If you have the wrong tone or are too light or too dark you will look washed out and sallow. Your skin can even start throwing off gold or pink tones that just don’t work for you, if this happens no makeup can fix it and your clothes wont even look right.

Your hair is the crown you never take off so lets make sure it fits just right!

Heres how!

Assess your skin tone – Are you a warm skin tone or cool skin tone?

You can usually tell by what colour jewellery you wear. If you have a lot of gold or rose gold you are a warm skin tone and if you wear silver or white gold you are a cool skin tone. “But I wear both” ahh this just means you have so much more flexibility in what tone you can pull off but you will need to be aware of how dark or light you go, more on this soon.

Another way to confirm the tone of your skin is your eye colour. If you have blue/light green eyes you will generally be cool skin tone and if you have dark green/brown eyes you will be a warm skin tone. Now with there being a lot of stunningly mixed race people out there you may have dark skin and light blue eyes (#jealous) I would imagine you can wear both gold and silver but you  may have a personal preference!

If you are a cool skin tone like Naomi Watts this means cooler colours, ashy, creamy, mousy etc will suit you better. Naomi has a pink undertone to her skin. This also applies to red or blue undertones.

If you are a warm skin tone, like Nicole Kidman this means the warmer tones will suit you better. Gold, Copper and strawberry blonde. Nicole has a peachy, undertone in her skin. This also applies to yellow or golden undertones.

 

Assess your skin colour – light medium or dark

Depending on how light or dark your skin is will depend on how light or dark you can go. Generally the rule is to stick to 2 shades lighter or darker than your skin tone anymore than that and you will be washed out and almost look grey and sick. See how in the image below once her hair is made 2 shades darker that her skin tone with some soft babylights  her skin colour she is instantly transformed.

Assess your lifestyle and personal style

This ones easy, we all know what we like and what we don’t like. Once you have determined your range of  hair colours that works with your skin tone/skin colour  (yes there will always be more than one) now you get to decide what you gravitate towards most, which one is going to make you wake up every morning,  look in the mirror and go damn girl you look good!! This will most likely change throughout your lifetime or even fluctuate summer to winter as our skin colour changes.

Detox your hair


Women do so much to protect their skin on a daily basis but not nearly enough to protect their hair. Especially with the silly season just behind us and summer still in full swing, there’s been a lot of hot styling and hair colouring to keep up with all the celebrations.

Whilst your hairdresser will be doing their utmost to preserve the health of your hair, excessive hair colouring and hot styling can lead to a loss of volume, breakage, dullness and split ends.

This easy 3 step detox will bring your hair back to life!

Step 1: Cleanse your hair and your scalp

You may think you wash your hair properly at home; but chances are you might not. Does it ever seem like your hair lasts ages before you need to wash it again after leaving the salon? Does your hair seems to retain its style and bounce for much longer than it ever would for you at home? Our secret little trick is really quite simple: we always wash it twice. This might seem excessive, but it really does make all the difference. The first wash removes any surface dirt and/or product build up and the second wash cleanses the scalp and hair.

If your hair still doesn’t feel clean enough after two thorough washes you may also need a deep cleansing wash. Just like the pores on your face, hair follicles on your scalp can become clogged with dirt, oil and product build up; leading to ingrown hairs, scalp conditions or hair that just doesn’t seem clean.

To thoroughly cleanse your hair, we recommend using a clarifying shampoo such as Scalp Reset by Matrix.  Work the shampoo through your hands and evenly spread the shampoo over your head. Start scrubbing, ensuring you concentrate on the hair at the base of your head (your nape) and work up towards your hairline. Thoroughly scrub the entire scalp including around your hairline. Rinse well and repeat.

 

Step 2: Add moisture

When you need to replenish parched hair, reach for a pre-shampoo treatment. They are packed with nourishing oils that deliver moisture to the hairs cuticle and protect vulnerable strands from stretching and snapping when being washed. Once a week massage the treatment through damp hair. Let it sit in the hair for 15minutes then rinse and shampoo.

Look for a treatment with essential oils. Chamomile to add shine, coconut to soften, geranium to strengthen and argan to add moisture. We recommend Bond Ulitm8 by Matrix as it has 8 essential benefits and is highly nourishing.

Step 3: Lay off the heat for 1 whole month

This ones a hard one – but it’s absolutely essential to getting your hair back to it’s healthiest condition. Using hot tools too often will weaken and dry out your hair leading to dullness and breakage. Most damage actually occurs in the last few minutes of women perfecting their style.

To get the most out of this detox we recommend no blow drying, hot tongs, hair straighteners, hot rollers or hot styling tools of any kind for 1 month. If you just cant manage 1 whole month you can limit your hot styling to once a week but you wont get the full benefits of the detox.

To keep you looking your best without the heat damage, firstly apply a leave in conditioner (such as CPR Phase 1 by Vita 5) evenly through your hair, fashion your damp hair in a few plats and sleep in them undoing them in the morning and giving your head a slight shake, or wrap your hair in a damp towel while you sit in the sun.

Once the towel is dry unwrap your hair for soft tossed waves without the frizz. You can always scrunch in some hair oil to perfect the style if necessary.

Summer hair hacks


Beach days are FINALLY here! And so is frizz, sunburnt scalps and having an at home moss green toner courtesy of your pool (#blondehairproblems).

Below I have listed a couple of easy hair styles to keep you looking fresh through this sweltering heat and a few hair hacks to save your hair and your selfie. Enjoy!

Don’t have time to wash your hair?

Create a chic double-knot bun.

  • Put your wet hair in a high pony and split the tail in two.
  • Tie the pieces in a knot by crossing one section over the other and pulling it through.
  • Repeat this one more time for the double knot.
  • Tuck the ends under the bun, and secure with a few pins.

Beach waves without the fuss

Fix your hair into one or two loose braids. The looser the braid, the bigger the waves. You can either choose to sleep with you hair like this and take the braids out in the morning or make this your day style and take the braids out for sexy beach waves at night. When you take the braids out don’t run your fingers through them just give your head a slight shake to soften your hair and then put it into place.

Mimic the salty ocean mist with a DIY spray.

Make your own salt spray at home with 20 ounces of seltzer water and a teaspoon of sea salt.

  • Mixed them together and pour it into a spray bottle.
  • From there, spritz into your hair, scrunch from ends to roots, and let it dry.
  • If you need to touch up the waves later, wrap your hair around a curling wand for only a few seconds, and then immediately tug on the
    strands’ ends to loosen.

Prevent your hair from salt water/chlorine damage
Rinse your hair first with regular tap water before submerging it in the pool or ocean. Your porous hair strands will absorb the tap water, preventing the chemical-laden pool water from damaging your hair. You can also apply a leave-in conditioner to your hair for the same results before going to the beach.

Use a T-shirt instead of a beach towel to dry your wet hair.
Terry-cloth towels pull too much moisture out of your hair, which makes it frizzy, but the smooth cotton of a shirt will remove the excess water and help reduce the frizz

If your hair turns green from chlorine
Rinse your hair with baking soda when washing your hair after swimming in a pool. Mix a bit of baking soda with enough water to make a paste and rub it over your hair. Then, rinse the baking soda out and continue washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo.

Does your scalp tend to burn?
Pour sunscreen in a spray bottle and dilute it just a bit with water. Then, spritz the mixture on your scalp to evenly distribute it.

Our sustainable future


For the past year my hair salon has been a part of this companies journey to achieving zero waste in hair salons. This company is called Sustainable Salons and have replaced my ordinary garbage bins. They recycle EVERYTHING!

I am very passionate about helping the environment and creating a world where our children (ill have some soon I swear!) can live long happy lives, breathing fresh air, admiring our oceans and the vast world beneath them. Appreciating nature and respecting it.
I believe everyone should be doing there part together to maintain our world. When we link together to share our resources, time, ideas and opportunities, what we can achieve, in our small corner of the world, can have a whopping impact!

Hair salons in particular have a large carbon footprint as basically everything we use comes in a plastic bottle or cardboard box. Then there’s the chemicals that go down the drain and the foil that gets thrown out..

I decided I have to make a difference

Sustainable salons is a social enterprise that rescues up to 95% of salon resources from landfill and finds re purposing solutions that benefit our planet, all while supporting the community. Superhero’s right!!

All of the proceeds from re-purposing the salon materials are donated to Oz Harvest and KiwiHarvest to distribute meals for those in need. They provide more than 2000 meals every month.

All our left over chemical waste is collected and gets neutralised and turned into water to help make our roads. All the hair that is left over from hair cuts gets collected and made into a boom. These booms are basically massive stockings that are stuffed with hair and they are used to soak up oil spills in the ocean! Genius!!

It doesn’t stop there, they are busy creating stronger futures for people with a disability by providing purposeful work within there material collection and processing streams. (Superhero’s creating superhero’s!!)

5 reasons why your hair colour doesn’t last


Do you love having your colour done at the hair salon only to find a week or two later its gone dull and faded, or the roots seem to have a bit of a glow to them and almost translucent.

As a colour specialist, I have the solution for you!

Below are 5 simple tricks to ensure your colour will last until your next appointment.

  1. Your hair is too porous to hold the colour and YOU NEED a treatment.

Believe your hairdresser when they tell you, you need a treatment. There are endless amounts of treatments for all different hair types and issues, so ensuring you are having a treatment that combats your specific issue is vital, otherwise your colour will continue to fade.

  1. Your hair colour needs to process for longer

If you are getting a translucent look or a root glow a week after visiting the hair salon,

then this is the solution for you. Typically colours process for 35-45 minutes so adding an extra 10-15 minutes on top of this will do the trick!

  1. You are having tint used on your ends instead of a semi

I always suggest a semi permanent colour on the ends. I know this sounds contradictory but a semi permanent has a lower peroxide level and as the hair on the mid lengths and ends are already coloured, so it needs a different formulation to what your roots need. This altered formulation will be kinder on the hair and your hair will hold onto it for longer.

  1. You are always in the sun

If you are like me and love being outdoors the best idea for you is to always wear a hat to protect your hair from the sun as it will naturally strip your colour.

On top of this you can use a leave in conditioner, this will work as a sunscreen for your hair and help protect it. (Wash with shampoo and conditioner as normal and apply the leave in conditioner onto towel dried hair before you style/dry your hair)

  1. You are not using the right at home care.

We are all different and all have different hair colours, hair cuts and styles so of course you need a shampoo and conditioner to match. Professional shampoo and conditioners will always be better. They contain the right amount of nutrients, essential oils, collagen, protein and moisture components.

Like treatments you must ensure you get the right products for your hair type and personal styling/colour situation.

Ask your hairdressers for their professional advice and don’t shy away from hair salon products, there is no doubt they work better!
